Publicity campaign to find buzzard poisoner

In May 2020 news emerged that 23 buzzards had been killed in a single incident in Co Cork after ingesting the banned pesticide Carbofuran (see here).

As if that news wasn’t shocking enough, it also emerged that the mass poisoning had been discovered in December 2019 and was ‘investigated’ by the National Parks and Wildlife Service but it was only publicised five months later once BirdWatch Ireland and the Irish Raptor Study Group had found out about it.

This poisoning incident and the apparent silence of the investigating authorities led to questions in the Irish Parliament (see here) and calls for the establishment of a special police unit to focus on tackling wildlife crime (here).

Meanwhile, an animal welfare charity ‘The Amica Projects’ has put up a reward of 5,000 Euros for information leading to a prosecution and has placed a full page advert in the Southern Star newspaper appealing for whistle blowers to get in touch:

  1. I, for one, wouldn’t be averse to contributing to a fund similar to the one described in the article to reward anyone brave and committed enough to give information leading to a prosecution in Scotland for crimes against birds of prey.

  2. This is a temporary, positive step potentially. Financial rewards might spark a conscience here and there locally BUT the news of the National parks and Wildlife Service remaining silent for FIVE MONTHS is both disturbing and bewildering. That has to be wrong and inexcusable. I wonder why they didn’t make the news public? Could it be through fear? I’d wager a guess at the answer being somewhere between gagged and threatened! Same old story in other words – people in power, with wealth and privilege and contacts, lording it over those who purport to protect the environment and everything in it, but are afraid to speak out for fear of upsetting certain individuals. Repeat formula ad nauseam. 23 buzzards is some toll and reflects the complete indifference to the law the perpetrators hold – they already know the outcome is a fait accompli……there’ll be no real consequences, no deep investigations, no convictions of those who are calling the shots. Picture 23 buzzards soaring through the high blue, their wheeling spirals a source of inspiration for us earthbound watchers, their freedom an illusion?
