Clear message to Westminster as 100,000 people call for ban on driven grouse shooting

At 7.32pm last night, less than three weeks after launching, this petition calling for a ban on driven grouse shooting secured the 100,000 signatures required for it to be considered for a debate in Westminster Hall.

The speed with which this was achieved is simply phenomenal. By way of comparison, the last time a petition calling for a ban on driven grouse shooting reached 100,000 signatures (in 2016) it took five months to get there.

This speed and this surety this time around will not have gone unnoticed.

A MASSIVE THANK YOU to everyone who has helped us reach the target. This is an ever-increasing movement of motivated and determined citizens and many people have helped spread the word about the petition, resulting in this landslide result.

We await the Government’s written response which was due after the petition reached 10,000 signatures (20 days ago, and counting) and now we also await a decision from the Petitions Committee who will consider our petition for a debate.

The petition is still live (here), for now!

  1. Just fantastic!

Recently back from hillwalking within a notorious Estate in the so-called Cairngorms National Park – amazing to return to see the petition surpass its target! No more empty, silent skies!

Well done Ruth, Mark and Chris and everyone else! I’m actually rather emotional!

  2. Fantastic news! If, however, there is a debate, let’s hope that we don’t have a re-run of the last ban DGS petition ‘debate’ where shameful Tories essentially laid into Mark Avery in an unedifying spectacle that did not warrant the title of ‘debate’. Hopefully – with the way things are going – by then we won’t have this disgusting Tory party anywhere near power. The only real chance to ban DGS is when the Tories are not in power.

    1. Sorry but the SNP have been in charge in Scotland for over a decade and Labour before them and we still Have weak laws, weak penalties, lenient courts and persecution galore, you can’t lay this on the Tories it’s an utter failure of all major parties.

      1. Hi Reginald, Indeed the other parties are far less that perfect, but the Tories are unapologetically PRO DGS. For example, it took a Labour Government to ban fox hunting and the SNP Government to instigate the Werrity review and other, important, Land Reform stuff. None of this would have ever happened under a Tory Government as it is their job to stay in power and do their masters’ bidding. At least with other parties there is a fighting chance of a ban.

  3. This is a fantastic achievement. However, to really make it mean something, the debate needs proper representation from parties and MPs who back the ban. Last time, it was an utterly embarrassing greenwash from the conservatives, who spent most of their time, along with Driven grouse shooting representatives, trying to call in to question the character and motivations of Mark, rather than being made to face the undeniable evidence that this practice is destructive to the environment.

    1. How dare you fail to give credit to the heroes of Hollywood down there in Edinburgh. I’ll have you know that when it comes to masquerading and bullshit they are right up there at the top of the league.

This petition has over 100,000 signatures. The Petitions Committee will consider it for a debate. They can also gather further evidence and press the government for action.

The Committee is made up of 11 MPs, from political parties in government and in opposition. It is entirely independent of the Government. Find out more about the Committee: https://petition.parliament.uk/help#petitions-committee

    Thanks,
