Check out this brand new website: https://henharrierday.uk
A much needed site set up to help coordinate Hen Harrier Days throughout the UK – it’ll include information on events in England, Wales, Scotland & Northern Ireland.
It’s only just launched and there’s much more to come but you can already find information about some of this year’s planned events.
Bookmark the website, watch for new events near you and get involved with this year’s Hen Harrier Day!
Very many thanks for this. With six Hen Harrier Days on the website and at least four more pretty much definite, we’re already heading for a record. But at least as important, we’re hoping for a greater variety of events than ever before. Large, small, arts-based, on the high street, in the mountains, we have that diversity already, but we’d love to be supprting many more community-based events with even more variety.
What that means is that anyone can do it, anyone can join in. The big events such as at Carsington Water last year are fantastic but so are local events that engage local people, their children and others.
So have a ponder what might work for you and in your locality, we’ll do our best to support you with advice from those who’ve done it before, national publicity to support your local publicity, speakers if wanted, access to publicity ‘stuff’ and so on. Since 2014 and the ‘Sodden 570’, Hen Harrier Days have been one of our main community-driven awareness raising events, let’s keep the momentum going.
Anyone making plans for this summer is an optimist.
A realist, according to the science. Not to doubt the seriousness of the pandemic but it will peak long before August.
Peak, maybe, depending upon the weather, but it will not have gone away.
Can someone give me a piece of technical advice? When I click on the link provided I just get a message saying “Safari can’t open this site” and something about the URL. I haven’t had this problem previously, as far as I can remember.
Iain, I’ve only just seen this, I’ll contact you in the morning. The link is good, and apart from a glitch on Sunday, there are no other reproted problems. Any other Safari users out there?
I use Safari and it works fine.
It’s my opinion that one thing which is really needed is a pamphlet giving details of the birds and with an eye-catching cover photograph. This would fill a serious information gap and would be extremely useful when talking to members of the public about the birds, their problems, the causes and what to do if they think something is wrong. I find that most non-birders I talk to are ignorant of the existence of the species – let alone the problems it faces. Of course, the information on action to take in the event of a problem would apply across the board. Could the major players get together and produce something in time for this year’s HH Day?
The site is in part intended to fill the gap. Have a look at the material under ‘Discover’. There is more to be added, and a more condensed version is probably needed too. Grateful for your ideas.
Thanks Alan. As someone has already done the hard yards in pulling this information together, it shouldn’t be too difficult to convert it into a printed format for the purpose I outlined. Being able to give folks something to take home with them is so much better than just a weblink. Given the current emphasis on the species and the acknowledged difficulties in getting the message across to the general public, I find it surprising that the RSPB and/or NE are not already up to speed on this.
