What an interesting comment. ” The salary is rubbish but nobody works in conservation to make a mint.” lets look at this . You are the biggest conservation body in Europe with 1.2 million members, the price per membership varies but the main charge is £60 a year- so circa £60 million a year income. Your head of finance, on a permanent contract gets £1,730 a week plus pension. You want someone to work for you on a very demanding job on a six month contract with no security for £360 a week , viz around one fifth of what you pay the bean counter . Free market economics? Possibly, but is it just?
It is not just. I don’t understand the RSPB’s thinking. Are they working on the principle that if the salary is too high it will attract the wrong type of people. If that is the case then there should be no high salaries.
The salary on offer is far too low and the RSPB is playing on the principle that dedicated people will work for buttons. However, there are many people who would dearly love to dedicate themselves to such a job, but are simply not in a position to meet their commitments from the salary.
I would love to be part of this project
“The salary’s rubbish but nobody works in conservation to make a mint.” That’s a scandalously flippant statement to make. This sector has a major issue with chronically underpaying staff for the work they do. That kind of language helps perpetuate the idea that environmental staff in these kinds of roles should accept peanuts just for the privilege of having a job. People should be able to work in these roles whilst also earning a decent living. Acknowledge that the pay is awful, sure, but don’t then try to couch that by making it sound like a role paying £9000 below UK media salary is somehow just something to be accepted because people shouldn’t expect decent pay. Do better. Don’t laugh off one of the worst offenders in the sector’s, the RSPB, bad behaviour. Don’t be part of the problem.
