Henry’s entering South Lanarkshire. You might know it from the annual raptor persecution maps – there’s usually a dirty great big red spot indicating that this is a raptor persecution hotspot.
You don’t need a map to tell you that, though. Just look at the landscape and the tell-tale muirburn strips of burnt heather on the hills will tell you all you need to know. This is driven grouse moor country.

Just go to Scotland on google earth and see the extent of that muirburn strips of burnt heather thing. That’s the best indication of what hen Harriers are up against. It really drives home the extent of what we are up against. Most of it can’t be seen from the road. I suspect there’d be more general public outrage if you could see it from the road.
What an ugly desolate landscape it looks too. There should be a law passed to stop degrading our landscape with that unnatural looking and degrading muirburn.
I was along that Leadhills road a few days ago. The sheer scale of the hideous muirburn gives the whole area an air of killing and death. The landscape and its wildlife have been destroyed by and for killers, just as in so many other places in the UK. In a hundred years time people might look back and wonder how such a tiny minority of downright nasty tossers were able to exert such power.
