Birdwatch Birders’ Choice Awards 2018: Conservation Hero of the Year

Many, many thanks to the Birdwatch team for nominating me for this accolade and to the Birdwatch readers who voted for me in the 2018 Birdwatch Birders’ Choice Awards. I did not expect this result!

It’s a huge honour to win, not least given the calibre of fellow nominees on the shortlist, but what I’m most pleased about is that the number of votes must be indicative of the increasing level of awareness about illegal raptor persecution in the UK.

It’s quite telling, I think, that all the previous winners of this award were also recognised in part for their campaigning efforts against raptor persecution (2014: Chris Packham; 2015: Chris Packham; 2016: Mark Avery; 2017: Ruth Peacey). That speaks volumes of the growing public support of our efforts to expose these crimes and hold those responsible to account.

I don’t work alone on this blog – there are many collaborators who contribute in various ways and this award is for all of us.

Thanks for your continued support.

  1. Agreed wholeheartedly! Thoroughly deserved. Pity it could not have been announced before your excellent presentation in the Ilde Valley a few days ago. Still, the champagne could be regarded as a pre-emptive strike?

  2. As I type this I’m smiling, that must mean something! Ah yes that you thoroughly deserved this award, I cannot think of a more deserving recipient, congratulations. I think it also means as you say more people are aware of raptor persecution, even so we are still in a minority, a well educated, up to date and sometimes vocal minority thanks to you and others. Lets all try and make that minority a majority together. Again well done its well deserved.

  3. I’ve no real idea who you are but am impressed by your absolutely relentless campaign. You are an Eagle to my sparrow. Keep on keeping on.

  4. Thoroughly deserving award for all that you do. You are a large part of the inspiration which fuels us lesser mortals. Whatever the right terminology you are the polar opposite to wilful blindness and we thank you and all who work towards RPUK and who provide such good comment. Happy Christmas.

  5. Thank you for everything you do to promote and further awareness. So very well deserved. Have a peaceful Christmas. Paul and Melanie.

  6. Congratulations. To you and the other previous recipients who have poked their heads above the parapet, as I’m sure that you are aware, I believe that your efforts will at some stage mean a much changed attitude in the public and politicians at some stage.

  7. Brilliant news! You’re a total inspiration. Thank you for the incredible work you do. The thoroughness and accuracy with which you demolish the arguments of THEM is incredible. You inspire hope in a long battle against power people with a disgusting lack of compassion or intellect. Wonderful! 😁

  8. It’s Christmas boiler has broken down,my car’s head gasket has gone but this news brought a smile to my face and gives me hope in my heart.Well done Ruth for your excellent work and to all those dedicated to protecting our raptors.Merry Christmas.

  9. Considering how much of your work has effectively been done anonymously this a staggering achievement, but totally unsurprised you got the award. Thanks to your efforts and have an especially Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year!

  10. So well deserved, thank you Ruth for opening so many eyes. Although I am one of the mostly silent majority that follows all that you do, I do keep up with all your efforts and appreciate them so much. We will win eventually, so all power to you. Thanks again.

  11. Great stuff Ruth and co. You deserve a medal as well for all your work to protect raptors and for showing up the persecutors.

  12. Absolutely well deserved, you’re an inspiration gal:) Here’s to 2019, let’s keep the momentum going, raptors and other persecuted wildlife will have justice. Thank you Ruth, thank you Team RPUK:)

  13. Ruth,

Thank you so much for all of your hard work. We will win, I just know it!

    Congratulations on this award.

  14. It could not have gone to a better home, without your info even more folk would be in the dark about these crimes.

  15. Excellent news , really positive and encouraging comments , the raptor persecution movement seems to grow stronger by the day , Keep up the Brilliant work All the very Best to those that care .

  16. Congratulations you’re a well-deserved winner. Whilst your posts mainly report on very harrowing situations, involving man’s cruelty to defenceless animals, it’s better to know what’s going on rather than to assume we live in a modern caring society. Please carry on the excellent work.
